Some venues leave a lasting impression the moment you walk in — and Harold Washington Library is one of them.
From the soaring ceilings to the iconic Winter Garden, it’s one of Chicago’s most elegant and architectural wedding venues. Photographing Shannon and Clifton’s wedding here was truly an honor — a day filled with emotion, style, and so much joy.
Their ceremony took place on the 9th floor beneath the glass-paneled Winter Garden, where natural light, symmetry, and classic design come together beautifully. Even in winter, the space feels warm, refined, and timeless — a dream for couples who love architecture and understated luxury.
Shannon got ready nearby at the Hilton Hotel, where we captured her details, bridal portraits, and some relaxed, joyful moments with her bridesmaids. The energy in the room was calm but excited — the kind of atmosphere that makes photographs feel natural and unforced.

Because the couple chose not to do a first look and their winter ceremony began after sunset, we made the most of daylight by taking a short walk through downtown Chicago before heading to the venue. Those moments — popping champagne, laughing together, and soaking it all in — became some of the most meaningful images of the day.

As much as couples love candid, documentary moments, I truly believe every bride deserves a few intentional, fine-art portraits on her wedding day—especially outdoors. Natural light, clean architectural lines, and the city backdrop create a timeless setting that allows the bride to shine without distractions. These portraits are not about stiff posing or trends, but about preserving how she looked and felt in this moment—elegant, confident, and fully herself. Years from now, these are the images that future generations will come back to: classic bridal portraits that never go out of style and tell a story beyond the day itself.

The ceremony itself was incredibly emotional — quiet moments, tears, laughter, and heartfelt vows shared in front of family and friends. The Winter Garden transformed in the evening light, glowing with warmth and elegance.
Photographing weddings like this is about more than documenting what it looks like — it’s about preserving how it felt.

One thing I value deeply is photographing couples with intention — especially when it comes to diverse skin tones. Shannon and Clifton’s wedding was a beautiful celebration of love, and ensuring accurate, flattering lighting and true-to-life skin tones throughout the day was an essential part of my approach.
Every couple deserves to feel confident, seen, and beautifully represented in their images — regardless of lighting conditions or environment.

The reception at the Harold Washington Library was filled with heartfelt speeches, laughter, and a packed dance floor that never slowed down. Guests gathered beneath the library’s grand architecture as family and friends shared emotional toasts, celebrating the couple’s love and the journey that brought them together. As the evening unfolded, the space transformed into a high-energy celebration, with guests filling the floor and dancing late into the night. Photographing receptions like this requires a balance of documentary storytelling and intentional lighting, capturing real emotion while honoring the elegance of such an iconic Chicago wedding venue.

Because Harold Washington Library has strict indoor guidelines, the couple saved one last creative moment for outside at the very end of the night. Rather than a traditional exit, the newlyweds and their bridal party gathered for fun confetti photos simply to celebrate and capture something playful. With gold confetti flying through the air and the city lights glowing behind them, it was the perfect way to end the night with bold, joyful images full of energy and personality.

If you’re planning a wedding at the Harold Washington Library in Chicago, working with a photographer who understands the venue, lighting challenges, and its rules makes all the difference. From elegant indoor ceremonies to creative outdoor portraits, this venue offers endless opportunities for timeless, meaningful images.
If you’re dreaming of a wedding that blends classic architecture, city energy, and genuine emotion, the Harold Washington Library is truly one of Chicago’s most incredible places to say “I do.”
